Prof. Dr. Katja Schlegel

I study individual differences in people’s ability to perceive and use emotional information effectively, also known as “emotional intelligence” (EI).

I have developed several performance-based tests to measure EI and its facets, such as the ability to recognize emotions in others from nonverbal cues.

  • Geneva Emotional Competence Test (GECo), with Dr. Marcello Mortillaro

  • Geneva Emotion Recognition Test (GERT), with Prof. Klaus Scherer and Prof. Didier Grandjean

  • Geneva Emotion Knowledge Test (GEMOK), with Prof. Klaus Scherer

  • Workplace Interpersonal Perception Skill test (WIPS), with Dr. Nele Dael and Prof. Marianne Schmid Mast

My current research focuses on the role of emotional intelligence in well-being and social outcomes, the measurement of personality and well-being through smartphone sensing, and the role of emotional intelligence in shaping the transition to parenthood.

I am also an Associated Researcher at the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences and an external researcher in the DigiWELL project where I contribute to the work package on experimental research into how digital technologies such as digital media and online environments affect social interactions, intergroup relations, and psychological well-being.
